VALIENT PUNJAB RANGERS IN 65 WAR

post-title

Soldiers are the pride of a nation. They are disciplined, courageous and selfless. Their life is full of challenges and they face every challenge with a smile on their face. The soldiers are trained for years before being sent on the war front. The training period is extremely difficult which brings the best in them and prepares for the battlefield. We have the privilege of staying in a peaceful environment and focusing on our personal life only because the soldiers are guarding the country round the clock.
I had the privileged honor to serve in one of the prestigious organizations, Punjab Rangers from Nov 2011- May 2015 as Public Relations Officer. I was instructed by the then DG Punjab Rangers – Lt Gen Mian Muhammad Hilal Hussain to formulate history of Punjab Rangers. During my tenure in Rangers, I realized the struggles and hardships these unsung heroes of the nation go through all the time. Their struggles are no less than any other person in the forces ready to serve the country. Rangers has always been upfront at any time of bedlam and work with dedication and integrity towards the prosperity and safety of the country. Yet, it’s depressing that Rangers didn’t get enough credit nor enough encouragement. This article is just a tiny example of how Rangers has always defended the country, and will continue to do so in the future. In 1955 with the creation of ‘One Unit’ in West Pakistan, the Punjab Border Police and the Sind Police Rangers were merged into one Force. In 1958 a re-organization committee was set up under the chairmanship of Mr Aziz Ahmed then Minister of State for Defence and Foreign Affairs. As a result of the decision on this committee’s Report, the Force was re-named as West Pakistan Rangers, which was further divided into Punjab and Sind Rangers. After 1965 War the Force was again reconstituted and fourth namely Chenab Rangers was added to it. In contrast to the regular Armed Forces the Rangers personnel remain operationally deployed all along the border throughout the year and throughout their career in the most telling conditions. Little known and little praised a ‘ranger’ is on a constant vigil along the eastern borders of Pakistan to protect the life and property of the populace of this sacred soil, and that is how the motto, Daim`n Sahir`n which means ‘Ever Ready!’
To formulate Rangers’ history I met many old Rangers veterans to collect its daring war actions. One of the veterans, Sub Inspector Mirza Muhammad Sheraz got sentimental many times while narrating Wagha war account. He narrated how bravely they fought at Wagha. On 6 September 1965, the Indian deceitfully attacked Pakistan without declaration of war. The war lasted 17 days and the Rangers’ valiant Jawans bore the worst brunt in Desert, Sialkot and Lahore Sectors. In Lahore Sector at Wagha, the Indians launched attack through Amritsar - Lahore road with tanks. Indian attack was sudden and swift. Their troops were lifted on tanks and brought up to the border and then hurled down. The rangers’ Jawans at the Joint check Post Wagha gave strong resistance with whatever weapons they had and exhibited great courage. The brave Ranger soldiers under command Wing commander Major Ilam Ud Din and Deputy Superintendent Rangers Abdul Shakoor put their lives at stake for Wagha and kept on leading their troops from the front with remarkable determination. Major Ilam Ud Din received the orders from his Command echelon to withdraw with his manpower but he refused to do so rather decided to fight with Indian soldiers. An Indian Army Captain with heavy strength of troops encircled Joint Check Post Wagha and asked the Wing Commander to surrender. Before Wing Commander could have said anything to Indian Captain, Naik Vehicle Mechanic, Zulfiqar pseudonym Billu intervened and asked Indian Captain to talk to him instead of major sahib. On this Indian officer abused Billu and in vengeance he opened fire on Indian Captain and killed him at the spot. Indian soldiers also opened fire on Major Ilam Ud Din and Billu. Both brave sons of soil embraced shahadat.
The amount of courage displayed by Deputy Superintendent Punjab Rangers Abdul Shakoor is yet another example of bravery which a true leader and brave commander can exhibit. After martyrdom of Wing Commander he continued fighting and did not let Indian soldiers to capture Wagha Post. It was Rangers alone who resisted Indian attacks for consecutive three days at Joint Check Post Wagha. Sub Inspector Mirza Muhammad Sheraz was a post commander  at Wagha, received fire from different directions by the  Indian soldiers. In retaliation, he fired back and hit one Indian Sikh Soldier on his right arm and shoulder. The valiant Sub Inspector Mirza Muhammad Sheraz along with his companions repulsed Indian attack and assaulted on them.  He captured five Indian soldiers of 12 Punjab including one injured Sikh soldier while remaining Indian soldiers turned back and ran away.  Later the turban of Sikh soldier was used as bandage on his injuries. They were first prisoners of war captured by Punjab Rangers at Wagha. Sepoy Muhammad Adalat Khan was the first Rangers` Jawan who received enemy bullet on his chest while distributing grenades at different firing positions around Joint Check Post Wagha and embraced shahadat. Other Jawans at wagha also gave a tough fight to Indian soldiers. After three days of Indian attacks, Rangers troops who were scattered at different posts, were re-organized  and joined the Pakistan Army where fought shoulder to shoulder with them. During 65 and 71 wars, the Rangers fought many battles, some alone and some in line with Pakistan Army. The Rangers distinguished themselves in both wars and gave an exemplary account of their fighting ability especially in the desert area where their exploits were more daring and conspicuous. In 1965 Indo-Pak War Punjab Rangers was the leading and dominant force which faced the first blow of war by the Indian Army on multiple fronts. I am sure there are thousands of similar war stories which we need to dig out as real heroism does not just exists in dusty tomes. There are heroes, many unknown or unacknowledged and they walk among us. We salute such great souls for their heroic acts and look towards them for inspiration. It is hoped that the contribution of the common soldier of Rangers will not be forgotten. He is the one who is keeping Pakistan safe, quietly and confidently.
